Film Noir

Algebra is always set in film noir style lighting.  This references the wood slats she is always hiding behind and is always in shadow.  Also, she supposedly has too much terrible knowledge.  Actually, this femme fatale is just totally ignorant, although she has had possible disturbing things happen to her in her past.
